Animaniacs (2020) First Impression

One thing that you should know about me right off the bat for added context: I was born in 2003. Therefore, I don’t have the added nostalgia factor that can easily impact anyone’s enjoyment of a rebooted 90’s show.

That said: I love this!

Okay, I mean I love the first four episodes. After all, that’s all I’ve seen so far.

Still though, every minute has been absolutely hilarious. Whether the humor is meta, political, tech-based, or anything in between, this show nails it.

Animaniacs follows three siblings - Yakko, Wakko, and Dot Warner - making mischief around the movie lot where they live. In addition to these main episodes, each one contains an episode of Pinky and the Brain, which features two lab mice spending every night trying to take over the world.

Aside from the pilot, which split its main plot into two parts with a PATB episode in between, each episode contains a main plot, a PATB episode, and a final sketch with the Warner siblings. I don’t expect this to change much, although I wouldn’t be surprised if they did another two-part main plot for the finale — and it’ll likely be another meta plot.

My favorite Animaniacs episode so far has been “Gold Meddlers.” This is mostly for the jokes digging at all of the different sports, the hilarious generic jock guy, and the super fun ending. In that same episode, they had an ending sketch called “Math-Terpeice Theater,” which was an absolute delight (and something that I wish real-life math class could be like,) but my actual favorite ending sketch so far was “Suffragette City,” for no real reason other than the impressive fact that they managed to write something that’s funnier upon release than at the time it was actually written (since, if one song in the pilot is any indication, this series was written two years before it came out). “Ex Mousina,” so far, has been my favorite PATB episode, simply because it is so unique compared to the others as far as the plotline and humor, and in all the best ways.

All in all, if what you’re looking for is light-hearted, pure comedy, I 100% recommend you check this show out on Hulu. I know I’ll be looking forward to seeing the rest!
